Vibration

Vibration is when an object violently oscillates (x,y, or z position) within a fixed range. Vibration is a haptic cue most often used in interaction design to indicate timely notifications as an alternative or complement to sound notification. While it’s primarily meant to be felt it can often be heard.

Examples:
  • Alarm clock functions can be supplemented by turning on vibration as well, either to increase the chances of noticing the alert. Might be used as a ‘silent’ alarm to be felt rather than heard.
  • Provide feedback that the a screen has been touched/received input
  • Different vibration intensities could communicate the importance of an incoming notification

Analysis

Orientational:

  • Vibration pulses could pulse faster when you are closer to you desitination.

Metaphorical:

  • A physical metaphor to vibrations could be sound. Both paradigms vary the intensity, frequency, and duration of waveforms.

Performative:

  • Haptic feedback could be mapped bad actions to correct user behavior
